Sustainability in Practice

One of the questions we often face is: “What does sustainability look like in practice?” This week, we share an example of how we applied a full sustainability roadmap to a mid-sized food-processing factory in Kenya. The company, which was seeking expansion capital, wanted to strengthen Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) compliance, reduce operational costs, improve brand value, and enhance efficiency.

Initial Benchmarking

We assessed the company’s climate risks, emissions profile, resource use, and compliance obligations. This included a greenhouse gas (GHG) audit and a climate-risk assessment, as well as a compliance gap assessment based on Kenyan environmental regulations and ESG reporting guidelines. The deliverable was a baseline report showing emissions, resource use, climate risks, and regulatory gaps

Target Setting

We established quantifiable adaptation and sustainability objectives aligned with relevant frameworks such as the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD). The deliverable was a Sustainability and Climate Target Framework with Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), timelines, and expected benefits.

Governance and Policy Alignment

We supported the establishment of a Sustainability/ESG Committee and developed a corporate Sustainability Policy. Climate risks were integrated into the enterprise risk register to embed sustainability into internal decision-making. The deliverables were an ESG Governance Framework and a Sustainability Policy.

Implementation and Execution

We executed practical sustainability actions to reduce risk and improve resource efficiency. This included renewable energy solutions, water-efficiency measures, circularity initiatives, supply-chain resilience measures, and employee training on climate-smart operations. The deliverables were an Adaptation Action Plan, CAPEX/OPEX estimates, supplier scorecards, and training modules.

Digital Monitoring and Reporting

We deployed digital tools to track ESG performance and support compliance. KPIs such as energy use, emissions, water use, and supplier sustainability scores were monitored, and reporting processes were automated. The deliverables included ESG dashboards, data-collection templates, and staff training on reporting.

Notable Gains

Through this roadmap, the factory achieved a substantial reduction in energy costs, improved resilience to water shortages, streamlined compliance reporting, and strengthened stakeholder confidence. The strengthened ESG profile and the CAPEX/ROI modeling improved the company’s investment readiness, supporting its successful bid for expansion financing.
